Let me tell you a little fact about flamingos that I bet you didn’t know (and never thought you’d learn here): *clears throat and prepares to impersonate Mr Attenborough* when the female flamingo gives birth, she loses her pink colour. *Ok end of impersonation* The information reveals that as time goes on, and their young becomes, well, less young, she progressively gains it back. Parallels have been drawn between flamingo mums and human mums. Although no human mum is losing the colour of their complexion due to the strain of early motherhood, there is a lot to be said for the sense of self that a mum (or parent) loses as they’re navigating how to retain their ‘them-ness’ while being utterly dependant upon for, well, life! The knowledge that flamingos get their colour back can serve as a major encouragement that so, too, will any parent!
But in the meantime, there’s an interim. A period where the colour remains faded, and there’s not a lot that can be done about it. In the absence of feeling like ‘herself’, we reckon that if there’s a way to show Mum care and attention, we should take it!
